Folic acid and ferrous sulfate are two essential supplements routinely prescribed during antenatal care because they help prevent complications and promote healthy pregnancy outcomes. Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is vital for the formation of the baby's brain and spinal cord during the early weeks of pregnancy. Taking 400 micrograms daily before conception and during the first trimester significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
