HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV):
HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV):
HPV is a group of viruses that can infect humans. It mostly
affects the skin and mucous membranes, like those in the genitals and mouth.
There are many different types of HPV, and some of them can lead to serious
health issues.
HOW HPV SPREADS:
HPV is mainly spread through sexual contact, like having
vaginal, anal, or oral sex. However, it can also be passed on through close
physical contact or sharing personal items with someone who has the virus. It
is important to know that you can get HPV even if you do not see any symptoms
or sores.
DISEASES ASSOCIATED
WITH HPV:
Genital Warts: Some types of HPV can cause warts in the
genital area. These growths are not cancerous, but they can be uncomfortable
and make you feel worried or embarrassed.
Cervical Cancer: Certain types of HPV can increase the risk
of cervical cancer in women. If left untreated, these infections can lead to
the development of precancerous cells in the cervix, which can eventually turn
into cancer.
Other Cancers: HPV is also linked to other cancers, such as
those affecting the vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and back of the throat. In
fact, most of these cancers are caused by HPV.
PREVENTING HPV:
Vaccination: Being vaccinated against HPV is a great way to
protect yourself. The vaccine is especially important for young people. It
helps prevent infection from the most common types of HPV that can cause
problems like cancer or warts. In Kenya, the vaccine is available in all health facilities across the country. To increase the uptake of the vaccine, it is being offered in schools to girls at the age of 10 years with the consent of parents and teachers.
Safe Sex: Using condoms consistently and correctly during
sexual activity can lower the risk of getting HPV. However, keep in mind that
condoms do not provide complete protection because the virus can infect areas
not covered by the condom.
Regular Check-ups: Regular screenings, like Pap tests and
HPV tests for women, can detect early signs of cervical cancer. By catching it
early, treatment can be more effective and prevent it from getting worse.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HPV
VACCINATION:
Getting vaccinated against HPV is really important. It helps
protect you from the virus and lowers the chances of getting serious diseases
like cervical cancer or genital warts. By vaccinating young people before they
become sexually active, we can stop HPV from spreading and keep them healthy.
CONCLUSION:
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common infection that
can cause various health issues. By understanding how it spreads and the
diseases it can cause, we can take steps to protect ourselves. Vaccination
against HPV, practicing safe sex, and regular screenings are all important in
preventing HPV-related problems. Let's work together to raise awareness about
HPV and its prevention, ensuring a healthier future for everyone.
